Tom Holland has hinted at a mystery character appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and there are some likely possibilities for the secret actor’s identity. In a recent interview, Holland discussed No Way Home, teasing the film contains “one of the coolest scenes” he’s ever done. The scene is a discussion between four characters about what it means to be a hero. According to Holland, those four people are himself, Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May, Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan, and a mystery character. Holland continued, saying his jaw was “on the floor” after watching the scene, and the quotes have since started speculation about the mystery character’s identity.

No Way Home is changing the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ways fans previously only dreamed. The first trailer for the film revealed Peter Parker (Holland) turning to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in an attempt to make the world forget that he’s Spider-Man. Doctor Strange tries to help with a memory wipe spell, but things immediately go wrong. As a result of Doctor Strange’s mistake and his spell going awry, a hole opens in the Multiverse, and the MCU collides with past superhero movies. Now, characters from previous Spider-Man films, such as Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, are free to enter the MCU.

With a Multiverse of possibilities, there are several viable options for No Way Home’s mystery character. First and foremost, a past Spider-Man actor could come into the mix. Then again, there is still one mystery character from Peter Parker’s past that’s unaccounted for in Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Additionally, Marvel has multiple characters connected to Spider-Man that could finally make onscreen appearances with the web-slinger. For instance, a post-credits scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage leaves Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom as a possibility, and fans are still wondering where Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool will make his MCU debut.

Another Peter Parker

For months, rumors and supposed leaks have hinted at Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in No Way Home. Jon Watts, the director of No Way Home, recently said the movie is like “Spider-Man: Endgame,” so if the previous Peter Parker actors would ever show up in the MCU, it’d be now. Also, Holland’s quotes about discussing what it means to be a hero would fit with him getting advice from fellow Spider-Men. With Maguire starting the big-screen portrayals of Spidey, it’d be appropriate for him to tell Holland’s Spider-Man that great power comes with “great responsibility,” as Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) once told him.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that the mystery character is a Spider-Man that MCU fans already know. Paul Bettany once teased a mystery actor in WandaVision, saying he and the person had great chemistry. That actor turned out to be himself playing an alternate version of Vision. Holland could be doing the same. With the Multiverse in play, multiple versions of Holland’s Spider-Man could appear, so the mystery character could be the actor trolling fans.

Uncle Ben

Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland’s first solo Spider-Man film, had a different take on Spidey’s origin. Instead of showing his spider bite and Uncle Ben’s death, the movie skipped all that and only vaguely hinted at the superhero’s past. Through two of Holland’s Spider-Man films, Ben has been an afterthought. Thus, No Way Home is now or never for the character’s return. Discussing heroism is a very Uncle Ben thing to do, so Holland could be teasing his appearance. Since the Multiverse presents unlimited possibilities, No Way Home could finally give Peter Parker’s influential uncle his due.

Venom

Venom 2 set up Eddie Brock/Venom to finally make an appearance in the MCU. In a post-credits scene, Venom is apparently affected by Doctor Strange’s spell, getting transferred into the MCU just in time to view footage of Holland’s Peter Parker on TV. In all likelihood, Venom will make an appearance in No Way Home. With both Holland and Hardy talking about wanting to work together in the past, an onscreen team-up would likely be enough to make Holland’s jaw hit the floor. Additionally, given the events of Venom 2, both Spider-Man and Venom may be on the run, which makes a conversation about the true meaning of a hero more relevant.

Deadpool

Deadpool’s impending debut in the MCU has caused speculation among fans, and No Way Home could provide the perfect opportunity ahead of Deadpool 3. Everything from No Way Home’s marketing indicates that the characters entering the MCU have some connection to Spider-Man, so Deadpool and Spider-Man’s love-hate relationship in Marvel’s comics make the character a candidate for an appearance. And with universes colliding, No Way Home may provide the perfect opportunity to ease Deadpool into the MCU. Additionally, Holland and Reynolds have a friendly relationship offscreen, so Holland would clearly be excited about an onscreen meetup.

Matt Murdock

Ever since the No Way Home trailer release, Marvel fans have speculated about Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The trailer initially started theories that a mysterious character whose arms are briefly visible was Murdock appearing slightly offscreen; however, those rumors turned out to be false. Still, with Spider-Man dealing with legal matters in No Way Home, the appearance of Marvel’s crime-fighting lawyer is a distinct possibility. The Multiverse puts Netflix’s Daredevil series in play for No Way Home, and it makes sense that a conversation about being a hero could come up when discussing a legal defense. Though Cox has previously denied appearing in the film, Andrew Garfield has done the same. Rumors and leaks all but confirm Garfield’s appearance, so Cox’s Murdock is still a possibility.

Another Avenger

With Doctor Strange and various Spider-Man villains already showing up in the No Way Home trailer, it’s doubtful any of those characters are the mystery actor appearing with Peter Parker. However, there are several other heroic options. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) already appeared via a hologram after his death in Avengers: Endgame. Considering his fatherly relationship with Peter Parker, he’s an option to appear. It could even be a version of Iron Man from another universe. Additionally, Chris Evans’ Captain America appearing in No Way Home could tie into the brief Captain America videos shown at Parker’s school in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Holland has also expressed an interest in working again with WandaVision’s Elizabeth Olsen. If Spider-Man: No Way Home is genuinely the Endgame for the franchise, it’d make sense to include some actors who were actually in Endgame.
