Why Fast & Furious Has To Keep Bringing So Many Characters Back

The Fast and Furious franchise looks set to continue bringing back some of its past characters — but why? Fast & Furious 9 saw the return of Han Lue (Sung Kang) after being presumed dead, not to mention a tease for Brian O’Conner’s (Paul Walker) future appearance. This establishes the idea The Fast Saga is open to featuring returning players from past movies, regardless of their official status.

Kicking off in 2001 with the original The Fast and the Furious, the car-centric franchise follows a group of skilled automobile enthusiasts led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) who have, over the years, developed a genuine bond with each other. Starting as a gang of street racers who were involved in illegal activities, they’ve evolved into good-doers for hire who specialize in doing dangerous missions, effectively outgrowing its original premise. Almost every installment has brought in new characters — some of them only appeared once, while others become beloved members of the Fast Family. Regardless, most have had an impact on its overall storytelling.

After 20201’s F9, the trend of bringing back old characters could very well continue in Fast & Furious 10 & 11. The events of the film set this up in various ways. For starters, its post-credits scene effectively brought back Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) into the mainline movies. While this could be the jumping point for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw 2, the aftermath of his and Han’s face-off could lead to the next main entry. Getting Deckard involved also opens the door for Luke Hobbs’ (Dwayne Johnson) appearance too. Meanwhile, Han’s connection with Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) can very well be a setup for the return of Gisele Yashar (Gal Gadot) too. Clearly, there’s no scarcity of opportunity when it comes to featuring old characters. So why does The Fast Saga have a penchant for bringing back players from previous films? It all goes back to its core theme of family. Deckard, Luke, and Giselle have all been a part of the “la familia” one way or another. Given their previous working relationship with Dom and his crew, it makes sense they’d be willing to help in times of need even if their paths have already diverged.

On top of that, the timing in terms of the franchise also contributes to this. At this point, The Fast Saga is gearing up for the end, with Fast & Furious 10 and 11 functioning as a two-part finale. Diesel has said they’re mining inspiration from what Marvel Studios was able to achieve with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Given that, it’s safe to assume they’re keen on delivering a satisfying narrative ending, with Universal open to leaning on considerable fan service. Aside from referencing previous films, what better way to achieve this by evoking nostalgia through the return of familiar faces in the universe?

This allows the filmmakers to present a cohesive overall narrative, as well; the appearance of characters from past installments solidifies its interconnected storytelling elements. It’s also worth noting, the aforementioned players who could return in the remaining Fast & Furious movies are all fan-favorites. So, seeing them involved in any capacity would be a treat for long-time followers. In any case, considering Cipher’s (Charlize Theron) wrath at her defeat in F9, chances are the “la familia” would need all the help they can get to get ready for her revenge.
