Hawkeye producer Trinh Tran explains why MCU newcomer Alaqua Cox – who plays Echo on the Disney+ series – is getting her own spin-off. Cox is set to make her MCU debut in just over a week with Hawkeye, the latest Marvel TV show made for Disney+. The show focuses mainly on Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, but it also promises to look ahead to the future through new characters like Echo and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). While the latter is geared to be a sidekick for Clint in his new adventure, Echo could very well start off as an enemy considering her comic book roots.
In the source material, Echo (or Maya Lopez) is a deaf assassin raised under the terrifying tutelage of Wilson Fisk. Typically, she’s a Daredevil villain, but it looks like her story is being adjusted for Hawkeye. Well before fans even got their first glimpse of Cox in the role, Marvel highlighted her importance by granting her a spin-off; Echo was first announced in March of this year and received an official logo this past Friday during Disney+ Day. Little is known about the series overall, though casting was underway as of August.
Speaking to Murphy’s Multiverse in a recent interview, Hawkeye producer Trinh Tran had plenty of praise to heap upon Cox. Fans were a bit baffled to hear a new character – who, it should be noted, is played by an acting newcomer – was already getting a spin-off, but Tran explained it makes plenty of sense when considering how great Cox is in Hawkeye. Tran said:
She is such a badass in this series. She really completely impressed us all with her determination and hard work in wanting to make sure Maya Lopez is the way everybody wants. I have to say there was a bit of nervousness at the beginning because Alaqua hasn’t been a part of the industry. To get somebody brand new and pull her into a character like Maya Lopez, it’s a big deal. But she took it in strides, worked hard, and proved to us that there is a character who’s deaf but is able to be a part of the MCU and be a superhero in her own right.
The MCU is chock full of characters and actors just begging for their own spin-offs, so it says a lot about Cox’s Hawkeye performance that she already has one on the way. Cox isn’t just entering the MCU with Hawkeye; she’s entering Hollywood, period. Clearly, the MCU has lucked out in finding her because it sounds like she’s an excellent asset. Additionally, Cox’s presence in the franchise is a major step forward for representation, as she is its second deaf hero and its first Native American hero.
Marvel likely won’t reveal more details about Echo until after Hawkeye completes its run, so there will be a bit of a wait for new information. The 6-episode series is bound to have some clues about what lies ahead for Echo, though, so fans should pay attention to her arc. It remains to be seen just how big of a role she will play in Hawkeye, but there’s a lot ahead for her in the MCU. This is only just the beginning for this “badass” character.
