Why Kathleen Kennedy Is Still The Best Choice To Lead Star Wars Future

Disney has confirmed that Kathleen Kennedy isn’t going anywhere as the president of Lucasfilm, and that’s good news for the future of Star Wars. Kennedy took on the role after Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney, being personally selected by George Lucas himself, and she’s overseen the franchise’s resurgence over the past several years. Kennedy has often been a polarizing figure to the fan base, however, with some contingents blaming her for what they see as a downward turn for Star Wars.

After extensive rumors of Kennedy being replaced, Disney CEO Bob Chapek put the speculation to rest in a statement that the Lucasfilm president isn’t going anywhere, and that the company hopes to work with her for “years to come.” There is a faction of Star Wars fans who will inevitably be angered by that news, but Kennedy is still the best choice to lead Star Wars into the future, despite some of the more polarizing projects she’s overseen.

The rumors that Kennedy would soon be ousted also put forward Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni – the respective creators of The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars – as possible replacements as Lucasfilm president. Both Favreau and Filoni’s have made undeniably important contributions to the franchise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re prime candidates for Kennedy’s role. Where Favreau and Filoni are storytellers – a skill that’s been put to excellent use as showrunners on their various Star Wars shows – Kennedy is a producer by trade. And her impressive track record in that role stretches back far before her time at Lucasfilm, including work on major blockbusters like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and The Sixth Sense.

Lucasfilm has certainly made some missteps in its recent Star Wars projects, but overall the Disney era has been a renaissance for the franchise. Critical reviews for the entire sequel trilogy far exceeded those of the prequels, despite claims from some fans that the more recent films are inferior. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker were polarizing upon release, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were widely praised. Those first two films under Disney rejuvenated the franchise after years of being a laughingstock for many in the wake of the prequel trilogy, and the recent wave of Disney+ content like The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars season 7 has been arguably the strongest period for Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back, and it’s Kennedy who has overseen that.

It also needs to be addressed that much of the criticism laid at Kennedy’s feet is the result of subjective dislike for elements of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. For every fan livid about The Last Jedi, there’s another who holds it in high regard. There is a visible, vocal group within the Star Wars fandom that has consistently complained of forced feminist and progressive messaging in the modern films, and it should come as no surprise that those same disgruntled viewers have decided repeatedly to blame the woman in charge. A different point of view might see Kennedy as someone who has helped broaden the appeal of Star Wars to a more diverse viewership, while also putting other talented creatives in place to produce great content. Disney’s Star Wars tenure has hit bumps in the road for sure, but the future of the franchise looks as bright as ever, with multiple upcoming Star Wars shows and movies that are worth being excited about, and Kathleen Kennedy is still a big part of that.
