Why Loki Tears Up When Miss Minutes Offers Him A Deal

Loki was in for a huge surprise at the end of his self-titled Disney+ show and there is a reason he tears up when Miss Minutes offers him and Sylvie a deal in the season 1 finale. The God of Mischief was plucked from the timeline as soon as he disappeared with the Tesseract. Being taken by the Time Variance Authority was not exactly how Loki envisioned his life’s path, which is why a specific moment between himself and Miss Minutes, the TVA’s artificial intelligence, is especially tragic.

In Loki’s season 1 finale, the trickster god and Sylvie managed to enter the Citadel at the End of Time where they eventually came face-to-face with He Who Remains, a physicist born on Earth in the 31st century who discovered the multiverse alongside his variants. However, before they could meet the man behind the TVA, Miss Minutes offered them a deal: she could put them back on the timeline without incident and Loki could have everything he’d previously wanted, including ruling Asgard and retrieving the Infinity Gauntlet. Loki tears up while listening to Miss Minutes list all the things he’d only ever planned, but failed at accomplishing.

However, Loki doesn’t tear up because he’s filled with joy. Rather, it’s likely due to his frustration regarding how everything in his life might have worked out the way he’d always wanted if the TVA hadn’t gotten involved in his personal affairs. Much of Loki’s life was seemingly manipulated by the TVA, with He Who Remains pulling the strings from behind the curtain. If Miss Minutes is to be believed, the TVA could have sent Loki back to his time with no issue and could have done so all along. The trickster god’s entire life was essentially as a pawn in the grand scheme of a time agency’s plans. Ostensibly, Loki was being set up to fail time and again and his reaction to Miss Minutes’ deal was his realization of that and how much simpler his life could’ve been.

The fact Miss Minutes offered to send him right back to where he left off implies Loki’s life didn’t have to turn out the way it did at all. Of course, if Loki did go back to his previous life, he would’ve become a different person. But simply hearing about getting the very things he’d strived for probably made him all the more sad and angry. To some extent, the God of Mischief was also mourning all he could have had. Loki previously believed all his choices were his own, but that couldn’t be further from the truth and his unshed tears are representative of the ways in which he’s been used.

Loki saw the outcomes of his life through the eyes of several variants. Still, Miss Minutes dangling everything he once tried to achieve in front of him — including winning the Battle of New York in The Avengers — was simply a reminder of everything he was robbed of thanks to the TVA’s existence. In Loki, the trickster god ultimately chooses his own path because to go back to the timeline would mean putting his life’s choices back in the hands of the TVA and he’d come too far to turn back now.
