Why Markarth Is Skyrim’s Most Interesting City

The world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim contains various different cities, ranging from major capitals to small towns and mining communities. Markarth is the capital of The Reach, serving as the westernmost of the large cities within the game. The city’s position within the mountains help to set it apart from many of Skyrim’s other capitals, as far as the landscape is concerned, but there are quite a few other features that make Markarth uniquely compelling as well.

All in all, there are nine major cities to be found throughout Skyrim, some of which are larger and perhaps more narratively significant than others. Solitude, for example, is the capital of all of Skyrim, Winterhold contains the mage’s college, and Riften is home to Skyrim’s Thieves Guild. These elements help to make these cities more notable, especially given that there are oftentimes more quests to be found in areas with a large guild presence or major involvement in Skyrim’s central storylines: Whiterun is a good example of this.

Arguably, Markarth doesn’t have as many distinct features as other Hold capitals might. It’s typically considered noteworthy for its silver mining above all else, at least according to most NPCs; but under the surface, Markarth has a significant amount of secrets to be discovered and even quests to play through. Although players may have to do a bit of exploring and interacting with various characters to find all of Markarth’s unique features, it’s worthwhile for those who might be searching for new and engaging content in Skyrim.

Markarth’s Most Interesting Features – Forsworn & Cidhna Mine

Why Markarth Is Skyrim’s Most Interesting City

One of the first events to transpire when the Dragonborn enters Markarth is the stabbing of a random citizen in the marketplace, just through the city gates, which in turn kicks off a quest that ends with the player being framed for murder and placed in Cidhna Mine. There are multiple different options to take to escape: players can side with or against the Forsworn, or even play both sides to their advantage, leading to various different resolutions. Additionally, the presence of extensive lore involving the Forsworn’s role in kicking off Skyrim’s Civil War makes Markarth one of the more engaging cities on the map in terms of storytelling.

Markarth’s Most Interesting Features – Dwemer Architecture

Why Markarth Is Skyrim’s Most Interesting City

Markarth was formed out of the ancient dwemer city of Nchuand-Zel, the ruins of which still exist beneath the city and can be accessed through the Jarl’s palace, Understone Keep. It was re-occupied following the mysterious disappearance of the dwemer. As a result, almost all of the buildings in Markarth are made out of the stone structures that the dwemer often utilized, which gives it a distinct appearance compared to the architectural styles seen in the majority of Skyrim’s other cities. The Dwemer Museum is also located in Markarth, and there are quite a few quests involving either the museum or the dwemer ruins.

Markarth’s Most Interesting Features – Daedric Princes

There are two Daedric Princes with significant presence in Markarth: Molag Bal and Namira, both of which have quests associated with them that the Dragonborn can encounter while within Markarth. An abandoned house within the city has a shrine to Molag Bal located beneath it, and the Hall of the Dead is routinely disturbed by the presence of cannibalistic Namira worshippers. Given that there are only just over a dozen Daedric quests to be found around Skyrim, it’s notable that both of these can be found in the same area, which only helps to further Markarth’s reputation as one of the strangest and most interesting locations in the game.
