Why Marvels Most Powerful Avenger Begged Thor To Kill Him

When the most powerful Avenger to ever live lost control of his immense abilities, he asked Thor to do the only thing that could possibly stop him: kill him. In Marvel’s Siege storyline, the Sentry lost complete control and in a moment of clarity, made sure the God of Thunder put him down before any more death and destruction were caused.

Robert Reynolds first appeared in Sentry #1 and was co-created by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, and Rick Veitch. Originally introduced as a schlubby man whose life was in shambles, it turned out Reynolds was actually the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe. The Sentry – who had the Superman-esque powers of millions of exploding suns – had wiped the minds of everyone on the planet (including his fellow heroes) in order to repress the memory of the Void – the dark side of his powers which was just as evil as he was strong. Over the years, Sentry has merged with the Void and had trouble containing his massive powers. In the Siege storyline, the Void took over, leaving the Avengers no choice but to take down their former teammate.

In Siege #4 by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales, Laura Martin, and Chris Eliopoulos, the Avengers take on Sentry (as the Void) who’s powers are fully out of control. After Loki tries to use the Norn Stones to help his brother and his teammates get stronger, the Void kills him on the spot. In both shock and anger, Thor sends a massive blast of lightning at the Void from Mjolnir which leaves a depowered Reynolds in a massive crater in the ground. When he emerges, Reynolds sees the damage he caused and asks for Thor to kill him.

The Asgardian Avenger says no, but the Void soon remerges and threatens the super-team again, forcing Thor to use another booming blast from Mjolnir to kill the Sentry. Thor takes Sentry’s remains into space and ceremoniously sends him into the sun so he can be put to rest.

While both the Sentry and the Void would return eventually, the hero’s death in this story is one of the most tragically necessary killings in the comics. While Thor wanted to bring Reynolds to justice, once he saw the Void return he knew he had no other option but to put down his former teammate for good. Otherwise, Sentry’s unlimited power could have destroyed not just Loki, but the entire Avengers. Reynolds knew he needed to die – as living as the Void was a fate worse than death itself. It was a tragic (and ultimately temporary end) for Marvel’s most powerful hero.
