Why MCU Fans Dont Like John Walker

Wyatt Russell portrays Captain America’s replacement John Walker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but his character hasn’t received a warm welcome from MCU fans. Set six months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the country is in need of a new hero now that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave up his shield. With Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) not interested in taking up the mantle, the government decided to implement a new Captain America. John becomes the choice of the U.S. government, much to the dismay of Sam and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The same negative sentiment has also been the overwhelming reaction by viewers of the Disney+ series.

Though Steve gave Sam his beloved shield in the hopes his friend would take on the role of Captain America, Sam donated the object so the government could display it at the Smithsonian Institution. They then use the shield to announce the newly appointed Captain America in John Walker. The man is a decorated and high-ranking member of the Army, making him a viable candidate even though he’s not a super-soldier. In Marvel Comics, John Walker is the name of the superhero U.S. Agent, who spent a time as an incarnation of Captain America. While Russell’s character is loosely based on the comic book character in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, certain aspects of his arc are being reimagined for the series.

Before John was even announced as the new Captain America, there was no doubt any figure who took on the mantle had tough boots to fill. Sam struggled with that notion before giving the shield to a museum, something he now regrets. The figure of Captain America has been around since the 1940s, though a large portion of his life was spent stuck in ice. Still, the Captain America moniker holds a heroic lore that is recent in the minds of not only the fictional MCU characters but also to viewers of the franchise. Considering Evans has been an integral figure in the MCU since 2011, fans are still having a tough time saying goodbye to his version of Captain America. By giving a newcomer Cap’s shield, it’s understandable why he’s being met with initial hate, especially when comparing John and Steve’s personalities.

John certainly doesn’t seem inherently bad. In fact, he genuinely implies that he wants to protect his country while embodying American values. On the other hand, John comes off as an egotistical and arrogant wannabe hero, especially for someone who hasn’t had much experience dealing with the MCU’s big three–aliens, androids, and wizards. Several of his brash personality traits are the opposite of what Steve emulated during his MCU arc as Captain America, which is bothering viewers. It also doesn’t help that Steve didn’t directly pick John as his replacement, giving off the notion that Russell’s character never earned the honor to hold the symbolic shield.

It’s unclear what the future currently holds for John and his role as Captain America’s replacement as it seems inevitable Sam will take control of the shield at some point. Russell’s character may never be accepted by MCU fans no matter what happens in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for the simple fact of him not being the original Captain America role. Viewers have grown emotionally connected to Evans and his portrayal as Steve. It’s nearly impossible to fill the void left by the actor in the same way a replacement is failing to follow in the footsteps of Steve Rogers.
