Why Red Notice Is A Better Franchise For The Rock Than Jungle Cruise

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is kicking off a new potential franchise with the Netflix action-thriller Red Notice, which could end up being a better venue for the star than Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Over the past few years, Johnson has risen to become the dominant Hollywood superstar, appearing in numerous blockbusters but never quite finding a leading franchise that’s truly his own. Some have pointed to Jungle Cruise as being that franchise, but Red Notice might be better for The Rock overall.

After years of appearing in smaller films after his professional wrestling career, Johnson shot to stardom after appearing as Luke Hobbs in Fast Five. However, his tenure in the Fast and Furious franchise was short-lived due to a feud with series star Vin Diesel. He found additional success in the modern Jumanji films, but as ensemble movies in a preexisting series, they couldn’t really become The Rock’s franchise either. Action blockbusters like Skyscraper, Rampage, and San Andreas, but none of them achieved the longevity or acclaim necessary to become established Hollywood brands.

The success of Jungle Cruise and subsequent announcement of Jungle Cruise 2 have finally given Johnson a franchise he can call his own (alongside Emily Blunt), but Netflix’s Red Notice might be even better for The Rock in that capacity. In the upcoming film, Johnson plays elite FBI criminal tracker John Hartley, whose skills lead him all over the globe in pursuit of thieves and dangerous criminals. From what’s been shown so far, the movie has the perfect blend of action and comedy to capitalize on Johnson’s charismatic persona, but that’s not the only reason why it could be a better franchise for him to helm than Jungle Cruise.

While Jungle Cruise 2 could be great, and the series definitely has room for new adventures, the scope of the franchise is very specific, and like Pirates of the Caribbean, it could drizzle out after a couple of films. Because Red Notice seems to be more character-driven, it has far more possibilities. Johnson’s character could star in any number movies, chasing any number of criminals through any number of exotic locales. The film is set up with a James Bond type of potential for future installments, albeit obviously not on that same scale.

One of the most impressive things about The Rock is that he hasn’t needed a singular franchise to become a Hollywood superstar. His own persona is more popular than any singular role he’s played, which has helped him ascend the ranks without needing a home franchise to establish himself with. But that doesn’t mean that an ongoing Johnson-centered franchise wouldn’t be great for his career and his future, and Red Notice looks like it could be the perfect candidate.
