Why ShangChi Is The Most Annoying Avenger To Design Fight Scenes For

Stuntmen Chris Cowan and Yung Lee reveal how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made the titular hero the “most annoying Avenger” to design fight scenes for. The 2021 Marvel Phase 4 movie starred Simu Liu as the Shang-Chi, acting alongside Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, and Ben Kingsley. The film sees Shang-Chi brought back into a world he left behind to prevent his father from unleashing an ancient evil.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced Marvel fans to some of the MCU’s most unique weapons yet in the form of the titular Ten Rings. Wielded by Wenwu (Leung), and later by Shang-Chi, the rings are capable of granting immortality and immense power, enabling Wenwu to build up the Ten Rings criminal organization over a thousand years. Though the rings were altered from their comic appearance, the changes made for some unique fight scenes – though this caused some trouble for the stuntmen behind the scenes.

Joining Corridor Crew on their YouTube channel, Cowan and Lee react to various scenes from the movie that they helped design, and the latter reveals the process behind designing action scenes for Shang-Chi. The stunt team used pre-visualization vignettes to plan out how action sequences are shot before meeting with and getting feedback from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Cowan then says the Ten Rings made Shang-Chi the most annoying Avenger to design fight scenes for, especially when compared to Thor and Captain America. Lee agrees, saying that they got lazy at times and just asked the filmmakers to imagine what they should be seeing when the rings were in motion. Check out Cowan and Lee’s discussion below.

Cowan: I will say he’s definitely the most annoying Avenger to pre-vis for. Like do you know how much easier it would have been to just have a hammer, or a shield? Like, the fact we had to do all these rings, I was like-

Lee: Oh yeah! That was- There were some points where we got a little lazy, and we were just like ‘Just imagine it! Just imagine there’s a rope!’

Cowan: Yeah, it goes around them!

Despite the difficulty that the Ten Rings caused during production, Yeoh’s Ying Nan teased their potential to rival Mjolnir, and they will surely have a key role in the MCU’s future. In the film’s post-credits scene, Shang-Chi and Katy (Awkwafina) are taken by Wong (Benedict Wong) to meet Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who reveal that the Rings are acting as a beacon to something unknown. In the comics, the Ten Rings were energy sources for a starship created by dragon-like aliens known as the Makluans, though it is unknown whether the MCU will retain these origins.

It is understandable how the stunt team behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings found creating the action for the Ten Rings difficult. The chain-like design of the energy-linked rings around the wielder’s arms made for brilliant fight scenes but would have been difficult to pre-visualize when compared to less-complex weapons where a more manageable stand-in prop can be used. Much thought went into designing the Rings, and with them being a key component to the future of the MCU, hopefully the stuntmen have an easier experience working on scenes going forward, now they have had the chance to work out how to bring the Rings to life.
