Why The Mind Stone Showed Wanda Her Scarlet Witch Costume

In one of WandaVision episode 8’s many flashback sequences, the Mind Stone shows Wanda in her true Scarlet Witch costume for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history. Forced by Agatha to revisit some of the most traumatic moments in her life, Wanda eventually finds herself back at the Sokovian Hydra facility from Avengers: Age of Ultron, where she and her brother gained powers after coming into contact with the Infinity Gem. It’s revealed that the process involved Wanda seeing a vision of who she truly is.

This isn’t the first time WandaVision viewers have glimpsed the traditional Scarlet Witch costume. In WandaVision episode 6 “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!,” Wanda wore a low-budget Scarlet Witch outfit, claiming to be dressed as a “Sokovian fortune-teller.” However, this Mind Stone-originated vision seems to be more in line with the MCU’s aesthetic. It seems as though WandaVision may make good on its hints, allowing the MCU’s Wanda Maximoff to don her true Scarlet Witch costume at last.

How the Mind Stone is able to manifest this figure to Wanda is still a little unclear, as is what it means for the Scarlet Witch going forward. It has been thought that Hydra experimenting on the Maximoff twins somehow unlocked dormant genes and accompanying superpowers. However, in WandaVision episode 8 “Previously On,” we learn that the truth is a little more complicated – and a lot more mystical. It turns out that Wanda has always been able to tap into the pool of the universes’ magic, albeit unconsciously. Agatha notes that a “probability hex” cast by a young Wanda kept the Stark Industries bomb from exploding, recontextualizing the traumatic two days first described in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This clever bit of retconning helps to establish Wanda as a natural magic-user, a staple of her comic book identity that has never been made explicit in the MCU prior to WandaVision.

In the world that Wanda creates for herself within Westview, her memories are suppressed but echoes of them manifest as she “writes” the events of each new sitcom episode. The Sokovian Fortune-Teller costume was foreshadowing for Wanda seeing a future version of herself reflected in Mind Stone – a result of real magical fortune-telling – but retroactively it’s clear that Wanda subconsciously used that memory as the inspiration for her Halloween look.

Seeing into the future is a skill that’s been demonstrated by several of the MCU’s magic-users. In Doctor Strange, the Ancient One is aware of the universes’ exponential possibilities and knows how the final moments of her life will play out. Strange himself peeked into over 14 million possible futures in Avengers: Infinity War as he looked for a way to defeat Thanos. Wanda already demonstrated her ability to see the future all the way back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, even if she wasn’t fully aware that she was doing it. In the film’s opening sequence, she showed Tony a vision of a destroyed Earth, with the Avengers broken and Captain America’s shield cut in half – all of which we see eventually in Avengers: Endgame.

WandaVision has deftly dived into the origins of the Scarlet Witch, making up for Wanda’s routine sidelining during the Infinity Saga. The show suggests that, in the MCU, the name “Scarlet Witch” has almost mythic implications. Agatha tells Wanda, “You’re supposed to be a myth. A being capable of spontaneous creation… This is Chaos Magic, Wanda. And that makes you the Scarlet Witch.” This sets the stage for Wanda’s emergence as one of the most powerful players in the entire universe – an idea already teased in interviews with Kevin Feige. Wanda’s vision in the Mind Stone is appropriately luminous, showing her the image of the goddess she has always had the potential of being.

Interestingly, both Monica Rambeau and Agatha Harkness have, for their differing reasons, encouraged Wanda to embrace her “truth.” Wanda has so often been kept down by the events of her tragic life, living something of a nomadic existence in the years since her parents were ripped away from her. Perhaps finally being forced to reckon with her past will allow her to fully step into herself and her formidable power (just in time for her appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). If WandaVision’s Mind Stone-aided premonition is any indication, Scarlet Witch’s power could well be limitless.
