Why The Most Important Event in Black Panther 2 May Have Already Happened

Details surrounding Black Panther 2 remain scarce, but there is reason to believe that one of the upcoming sequel’s most crucial moments may have already happened. Previous phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were naturally littered with subtle clues and plot points that have either already seen a narrative payoff, or will in the near future as Phase 4 gets underway. And while it may seem like a disparate connection on the surface, 2010’s Iron Man 2 may offer some crucial insight on the events of Black Panther 2.

Black Panther 2 is expected to arrive in theaters on July 8th, 2022. The franchise’s future remains unclear in the wake of Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death, but Marvel Studios will not be recasting the role of Black Panther. Rather, the film will explore the rich world of Wakanda, and engage more deeply with its many characters and tribes. Of course, while nothing has been confirmed, the most highly anticipated aspect of Black Panther 2 is a character who has yet to make his MCU debut: Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Namor is likely the most high-profile superhero yet to be introduced to the MCU. He has a long and storied history as it relates to Black Panther and the nation of Wakanda, and there is even speculation that the relationship between Wakanda and Namor’s Atlantis could lead to Civil War II in the MCU. While Namor is a typical member of The Avengers in the comics, the expectation is that he will initially serve as Black Panther 2’s primary antagonist. After all, the Sub-Mariner is the ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Like the DCEU’s Aquaman, Namor is concerned with protecting his kingdom first and foremost. Therefore, his arrival in the MCU will likely require a bit of conflict before he can align with The Avengers. But what if Namor has already arrived?

Considering Namor’s immense popularity as a comic book character, his absence from the current roster of MCU films may have surprised many. But that’s not to say the character has been missing entirely from the MCU. Namor is yet to appear onscreen, but Marvel has subtly referred to his home of Atlantis several times. Most notably, Howard Stark demonstrated his ability to track down Atlantis at the end of Iron Man 2, which has proven to be one of the most prescient films in the MCU, despite its middling reception. While discussing the Avengers Initiative with Nick Fury, Stark pulls up a map of locations that he and S.H.I.E.L.D. are monitoring around the world. One such location is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Likewise, towards the end of Avengers: Endgame, Okoye notes that there have been underwater earthquakes off the coast of Wakanda, and that the nation planned on addressing them head-on.

Stark’s discovery of Atlantis, alongside Wakanda’s earthquake concerns, make it highly probable that the Wakandans could have already discovered Atlantis themselves, and perhaps even already have interacted with Namor. Wakanda is one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, with research capabilities practically exceeding those of S.H.I.E.L.D. If Namor is truly set to make his MCU debut in Black Panther 2, it is safe to wonder if the film will find the two sides already in conflict with one another.
