Will Ferrell Reveals Why He Split With Producing Partner Adam McKay

Will Ferrell has detailed the circumstances surrounding his split from longtime creative partner Adam McKay. The pair first met on Saturday Night Live, where Ferrell and McKay were both hired ahead of the 21st season in 1995. Brought in during a transitional time for the sketch comedy series, Ferrell would go on to become one of SNL’s indelible performers, while McKay served as head writer for two seasons of his six-year run.

After collaborating on Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, McKay and Ferrell launched Gary Sanchez Productions in 2006. The company would spawn a number of Ferrell-starring, McKay-directed films, including Step Brothers, The Other Guys, and Anchorman 2, as well as TV series like Eastbound & Down. The pair also co-founded the website Funny or Die. In 2019, McKay and Ferrell suddenly announced that they were parting ways.

Two years after dissolving his partnership with McKay, Ferrell tells THR that their disparate visions for the company led to its disintegration. “[Adam] wanted growth and a sphere of influence,” recounts Ferrell. The comedian, meanwhile, didn’t want to bite off more than he could chew. “At the end of the day, we just have different amounts of bandwidth.” Read below for Ferrell’s first public comments on the breakup since 2019.

“Adam was like, ‘I want to do this, and this, and this’; he wanted growth and a sphere of influence, and I was just like, ‘I don’t know, that sounds like a lot that I have to keep track of.’ ‘To me, the potential of seeing a billboard, and being like: ‘Oh, we’re producing that?’ I don’t know. … At the end of the day, we just have different amounts of bandwidth.’”

McKay’s desire for growth, in both scope and scale, became evident towards the end of his tenure at Gary Sanchez. The director ventured into more dramatic and political films in the 2010s, helming the Academy Award-winning The Big Short in 2015 and Vice in 2018. Following the dissolution of Gary Sanchez, McKay founded Hyperobject Industries in 2019.

Ferrell may humbly tout his limited bandwidth compared to McKay, but the funnyman has become a production juggernaut in his own right. A prolific producer of film and television, Ferrell is among the creative voices behind Booksmart, Hustlers, and Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar, all of which have been released under the Gloria Sanchez banner.

With Gary Sanchez Productions set to continue with all existing projects through completion, Ferrell and McKay’s partnership isn’t entirely finito. They co-produce the ongoing Dead to Me, as well as the HBO hit Succession. Furthermore, the former partners emphasize that their split was amicable and haven’t ruled out additional collaborations in the future. In the meantime, the duo is busy with individual projects. McKay’s star-studded Don’t Look Up opens in theaters on December 10 and debuts on Netflix on December 24. Ferrell, meanwhile, is set to star in the upcoming miniseries The Shrink Next Door, premiering on AppleTV+ on November 12.
