Will GTA 6 Be At E3: Every Reason Why (& Why Not)

Rockstar likes to announce new games on its own timetable, but it’s not inconceivable that GTA 6 could make a surprise showing at E3 2021.

Will GTA 6 Be At E3 Every Reason Why (& Why Not)

Grand Theft Auto 6 is simultaneously in high demand and something few gamers are holding their breath for. GTA 5 originally shipped in 2013 and, eight years later, Rockstar is actually preparing a second facelift in the form of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA 5 due in November. The sequel is almost certainly far into development, though, and there’s a small chance it could be revealed at E3 2021, which starts June 12.

For the public, it’s still not clear what GTA 6 will look like. Rumors and fan wishlists have pointed to Vice City as a setting, but while this is a strong possibility, many of the rumors surrounding GTA 6 have been questionable or debunked. There have even been suggestions of the game having a multi-city setting, although that would require enormous amounts of work even for a business as large as Rockstar.

If the game does appear at E3, it will be because the timing works out for Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. The latter is a confirmed presenter at E3, and while it has two dozen studios under its wing, a new Grand Theft Auto would be a natural headliner – especially at the expo’s Awards Show. That would require GTA 6 to be advanced enough to have a polished trailer, and a release date within a reasonable timeframe, probably no later than the end of 2022. Take-Two would also have to be comfortable sharing the spotlight, since while a new GTA would easily top headlines it might still have to compete with games like Bethesda’s Starfield or FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.

Rockstar Is Going To Behave Like A Rock Star

The safer bet is that GTA 6 will be announced separately, even if that happens later in 2021 or next year. Major publishers like Ubisoft now regularly host their own livestreams, sidestepping expos to exercise total control. An independent reveal would allow Rockstar to show as much or as little as it wants at any time it wants. Indeed, Rockstar already has a history of premiering games on its own schedule – GTA 5 was confirmed in October 2011, and its last major release, Red Dead Redemption 2, was unveiled in October 2016. E3 needs Rockstar far more than the other way around.

The show is all about surprises, so nothing – not even a reveal of GTA 6 – can be ruled out completely. But it’s also important to be realistic. Rockstar has a marketing strategy, and E3 is probably increasingly irrelevant to it, or at least optional. Grand Theft Auto 6 will show up when it’s good and ready, preferably as more than a short teaser trailer.
