Will The Next Rainbow Six Game Keep Its ‘Quarantine’ Title? [UDPATED]

Because of COVID-19 the word ‘quarantine’ takes on a different meaning, and the next ‘Rainbow’ game may need to be changed because of it.

[Update: Ubisoft implied in its Q3 2020-2021 earnings call that it may change the name of Rainbow Six Quarantine, but it confirms that the game will still release in 2021. The original article continues below:]
The current COVID-19 pandemic has been changing everyone’s lives in a variety of different ways. Not only are we changing the way that we work, play, and teach, but it’s also changing the way video game developers create. Before COVID-19 was even a thought it anyones’ mind, Ubisoft released a teaser trailer for the next anticipated game in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 franchise at E3 2019, and at the end, was revealed that the next game would be called Rainbow Six Quarantine.
The Rainbow Six series has seen its fair share of changes since the launch of the first initial game back in 1998. Being a tactical FPS based around the famous Tom Clancy novels with the same name, Rainbow Six follows the journey of an international anti-terrorist unit in charge of hunting down, well, terrorists. The franchise has spawned almost 15 games and is still going strong after 12 years.
After Ubisoft’s rocky Rainbow Six Siege launch back in December of 2015, the gaming giant had to put in some serious elbow grease in order to get the game in working order for fans to be able to enjoy a smoother game play experience. After some time, updates, and patches, eventually Rainbow Six: Siege became one of the best multiplayer games to date. Ubisoft refused to let Rainbow Six Siege continue at the broken state it was in when it launched, and has proven to fans and players that major developers will listen to complaints in order to improve and upgrade a game to make it better than what it originally was.
Four years after the launch of Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft teased fans by releasing a short trailer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June of 2019 of a spinoff game. Here’s what we know from that short Rainbow Six Quarantine teaser – it gives off creepy, darker vibes than its brighter counterparts, hinting towards a deep dive into the horror genre, with the international anti-terrorist unit fighting more than just terrorists, as indicated by the main characters’ infected arm in the trailer. And of course, the timely title of “Quarantine”. It seems very reminiscent of the co-op “Outbreak” event that Ubisoft brought to Rainbow Six Siege in Year 3.
We assume they gave the game the name Quarantine because of the way the characters in the trailer were trapped in an apparent hospital-type building, with the main character fighting an infection that has his arm turning completely black. While that may have been our version of what a ‘quarantine’ looked like in 2019, the word’s meaning and seriousness has been completely revised due to the coronavirus pandemic, and this pandemic may have Ubisoft contemplating whether they should be changing the current title, or keeping it the same.
Rainbow Six Quarantine’s Title Has A Very Different Meaning Now
Entertainment companies have had to alter their content after real-world tragedies made their content appear a little too close to the tragic event that has taken place. While Disney was working on the Lilo & Stitch movie back in the early 2000s, the entire world was rocked to its core by the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001. Disney decided to change an airplane scene towards the end of the movie that looked a bit like the scene that occurred on 9/11, changing the airplane to a spaceship that would be flying around a remote island instead, and not through the city.
Companies usually make these changes to detach their work from a tragic event that has happened in the real world, so fans can enjoy the piece of work for what it is. Fortunately, Ubisoft announced last year that it was pushing some of its unreleased video games back, one of which included Rainbow Six Quarantine, for reasons believed that the company was doing some reorganizing of its editorial teams behind the scenes, causing some delays and setbacks for some of its AAA titles.
The setback gives Ubisoft a chance to evolve some aspects of its games, hopefully avoiding some of the issues of the latest changes to Far Cry, Ghost Recon, and Assassin’s Creed (where all the games seem to bleed into same RPG template, heavy with microtransactions) while the developer has the extra time. After all, the devs working remotely right now are in real “quarantine” themselves. Whether Ubisoft will be taking this opportunity to change the next Rainbow Six’s title or not, fans will have to wait and see.
Ubisoft’s E3-esque event for 2020 is scheduled for July 12th and is expected to include PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X reveals, alongside real details on Rainbow Six Quarantine and next-gen details for Rainbow Six Siege which Ubisoft Montreal confirmed to us when we visited earlier this year.
