Willem Dafoe Wants To Appear In A Potential Joker Sequel

Actor Willem Dafoe has practically become everyone’s favorite villain throughout the years and directors are taking notice. It appears Dafoe now has an interest in joining a potential sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

Dafoe had an incredibly busy and ridiculously successful 2021, having starred in three major films done by prestigious directors such as Wes Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, and Paul Schrader. However, despite how many antagonists he has played, his character Green Goblin from 2002’s Spider-Man is without a doubt his most iconic role. Dafoe’s innate ability to tap into the wicked and evil notions of humanity lurking within the depth of the characters he is challenged with proves just how dedicated he is to his craft.

During an interview with GQ in which the topic of the villainous role of the Joker came up, Dafoe seemed to also side and appreciate Phoenix’s interpretation and performance in Joker, so much so that he is lobbying for a potential sequel. However, Dafoe is making it clear that he would much rather stand side-by-side with Phoenix than be in competition over who is the best Joker. Dafoe stated, “There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter. So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn’t the joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly, if you had Phoenix’s Joker. Then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did. I fantasized about that.”

When it comes to his craft, Dafoe shared, “I don’t mean to get heavy here – but I don’t want to wake up a day without thinking, ‘what am I doing here?’ You’ve got to find out what you like to do and not even what you’re good at, but what you feel engaged in, pursue that.” Recently, Dafoe had the opportunity to reprise his most infamous role after nearly two decades for the long-awaited film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Dafoe made it very clear when first approached by producer Amy Pascal and director Jon Watts that he wasn’t going to reprise his role after so long only to appear in a quick cameo or to perform strictly, meaningless action sequences.

The reason why Dafoe is so legendary for the villains he is able to portray on screen is the complexity with which he inspects the character’s inner lives. He would have never been able to make it this far in his career if he was only somehow able to touch the superficial notions of what anti-heroes are. This is perhaps why Dafoe and fans have long held onto the idea of him portraying, perhaps the most famous villain in cinema history.

Despite Phoenix being praised and celebrated for his performance as the Joker, Dafoe has been told repeatedly that the role was born for him. Fans will have to wait it out and keep their fingers crossed in the hopes that Dafoe will one day eventually appear in a potential Joker sequel.

Joker is now available to stream on HBO Max.
