World of Warcraft Tops Fortnite as Twitchs Most Popular Game

After dominating the streaming corner of the gaming industry for several months, Fortnite has now been (briefly) topped by World of Warcraft as Twitch’s most popular game. Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft is one of the most iconic and influential video games ever made. It originally released way back in 2004 but has maintained a loyal player base ever since then, despite a constant stream of competition arising from all corners of the industry, including games like BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Although World of Warcraft’s player base is not at the level that it once was, which is understandable given that the game is more than a decade old and requires a monthly payment in order to play, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of gamers routinely come back to the title whenever a new expansion releases. And it looks like that’s true even for the Battle for Azeroth expansion, which is the game’s latest content update that released this month, seeing as thousands of players are now streaming the title.

On August 14, World of Warcraft has taken over Fortnite as Twitch’s most popular game, with 249,414 streams for WoW compared to 105,713 for Fortnite (via Game Rant). Of course, those numbers are bound to fluctuate, and Fortnite will more than likely retain the title of being the most popular game on the streaming service for the month of August – a title that it has held since March 2018, when it overtook League of Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as Twitch’s most streamed game.

In addition to new missions and events, the Battle for Azeroth expansion also came with an increase in the game’s level cap – going up to 120. Playing through all the new content helps players in capping out their characters, but it usually takes some time. However, one dedicated World of Warcraft player managed to do it in just a few hours. Twitch streamer Gingi managed to reach level 120 in just four hours and 17 minutes. It’s not only an impressive feat but also a record, so it seems.

While there are millions of people still playing World of Warcraft, even more now than perhaps there was a few days ago, Fortnite remains one of the top games in the world given its replayability factor as well as the fact that the Battle Royale mode is free on virtually every platform. So streaming matches is quite easy, even for newcomers to gaming, who may find themselves streaming matches with their friends. Because of that, World of Warcraft may not remain on top for long, if it hasn’t been dethroned already.
