Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer likes the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, so much so that the Series X could be getting a similar redesign. Spencer is rarely shy in giving his opinions on the gaming industry, whether it comes to his distinguished competition’s slow approach to bringing titles to the PC or the perceived differences between Fable 4 and Elder Scrolls 6.
Most recently, Phil Spencer has gone into detail about his company’s various studio buyouts, such as Xbox’s blockbuster purchase of Bethesda earlier this year or potential new Xbox studios in countries like India, Africa, or South America. He’s also reassured wary gamers that while big multiplayer online titles like Elder Scrolls Online draw in big money for Xbox, it won’t be turning away from story-based single-player games anytime soon. In his latest outing, Phil Spencer is still looking toward the future of Xbox, and he might be taking a few pages from Sony’s playbook when it comes to possible updates for the Series X controller.
As reported by VideoGamesChronicle, Phil Spencer recently discussed the PS5’s DualSense controller during a sitdown with the Patreon-funded Kinda Funny Games podcast. While talking about what kind of changes or extra accessories could be coming to the Xbox Series X, Spencer said that his team was “definitely thinking about different kinds of devices that can bring more games to more places. There’s probably some work that we’ll do on the controller. I think Sony’s done a nice job with their controller and we kind of look at some of that and [think] there are things that we should go do.”
This isn’t the first time Xbox has shown an interest in the PlayStation’s controllers. Not too long ago, an ad for Xbox Game Pass’s new Cloud-based gaming service depicted a player using a PlayStation 4 controller, and a survey taken at the beginning of the year revealed that Xbox players covet some of the DualSense’s most noteworthy new features, such as its adaptive triggers and Haptic Feedback that provide players with an “authentic sensation” of in-game environments and situations.
These features have earned both the DualSense and the PlayStation 5 in general high praise from players for capturing the feel of firing off futuristic weapons in Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart or traversing alien terrain in Returnal, so it might not be that much of a surprise that Phil Spencer is looking at the DualSense for inspiration when it comes to enhancing the Xbox Series X’s own controller. Only time will tell if Spencer’s words are a sign of things to come, but anything is possible in the world of video gaming.
