XMEN Emma Frost Gets Slapped By A Raging Storm

Spoilers below for Marauders #8!

The X-Men have lost one of their own. Kate Pryde, Red Queen of the Hellfire Company and leader of the Marauders, was murdered by another Hellfire member. While Kate’s killer remains unknown to the Marauders, her death has been confirmed. In this week’s Marauders #8, every member of the pirate crew grieves their own way: sorrow, vengeance, duty, and in Storm’s case, pure elemental rage. The weather-controlling mutant holds Emma Frost, the White Queen, responsible for Pryde’s death. When she confronts Frost about it, years of frustration physically explode out of her. When Frost balks, Storm lets it out in one cathartic blow.

The issue opens with Bishop discovering Pryde’s lifeless body in the ocean and confirming the kill. He reluctantly sends a telepathic message to Frost to let her know the bad news. Emma collapses. Iceman is the next to learn when Emma sends him to extract Bishop. The cryokinetic blasts through solid steel, his eyes reduced to hateful pinpricks of light. He takes his anger out on the human supremacists that he thinks killed her, freezing trigger fingers and snapping off arms in a show of deterrence. Bishop reminds Iceman of Krakoan law (“Kill no human”) to make him relent, and he reluctantly exfiltrates, then leaves to have a talk with Storm.

When Ororo arrives at the White Queen’s palace, her rage is incandescent. “Every time you traipse into our lives, it all goes to hell,” the weather goddess shouts. As any couples’ counselor could tell you, the word “every” belies years of context behind this particular confrontation. Emma Frost has spent real-world decades switching back and forth from evil to good, joining villains and manipulating allies, to pursue her own ethically ambiguous ideals. Storm, however, is morally immovable, the matriarch of the X-Men and one of its most consistent forces for good in a landscape of shifting loyalties. She’s angry because to her this represents what Emma always brings with her: uncertainty, treachery, and destruction.

Storm tells her that Kate should have been kept at Krakoa. Emma goes on the defensive. When Frost pointedly asks Storm why she wasn’t shadowing Pryde per instruction, Storm lashes out and strikes her in the face. It’s not the kind of move a fighter uses to injure an opponent; it’s a reprimand, a response to a grave insult. Emma immediately walks it back before Storm brings her hand back around.

The rest of the scene is heartfelt but cryptic. Storm screams and releases a burst of lightning, and the Krakoan flowers glow and release their petals. The pair hug and bond over the shared hope that Kate gave them. Storm praises the gift of “getting to slap you upside the head after all these years” and the White Queen playfully offers to turn to diamond so that Storm can beat her around some more, but the moment of conflict has already passed.

What defused the violence so suddenly? Frost’s empathy goes a long way. The entire course of the series has centered around Kate’s emotional growth and Emma’s constant support in that journey, and losing Kate brings a new level of genuine emotion out of her. But, the prominence of the flowers and the way their petals surround the mutants suggests more than that. Are Krakoa’s blooms influencing the emotions of the inhabitants? As the new mutant nation develops, readers may look back on this moment as a sign of Krakoa’s true nature lying in plain sight.
