Yellowjackets Necklace Explained Who Died In Episode 1s Opening Scene

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets episode 1.

Showtime’s Yellowjackets episode 1 leaves a lot of unanswered questions right from the opening scene, which shows an unknown girl with a gold necklace falling into a trap and — presumably — dying. Equal parts survival story, coming-of-age teen drama, and psychological thriller, Yellowjackets boasts an outstanding cast of actors, led by Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, and Melanie Lynskey. Debuting on Showtime on November 14, 2021, Yellowjackets is likely to be a huge hit for the streamer but is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Yellowjackets episode 1 follows a team of high school soccer players as they prepare to go to Nationals. Jackie (played by Sweetbitter actress Ella Purnell) is the team captain and the quintessential “popular girl” with the cute jock-type boyfriend, ribbons in her hair, and a peppy nature to boot. Her best friend Shauna (played by Sophie Nélisse), however, isn’t so impressed with high school life and seems to harbor secret jealousy of Jackie. Foreshadowing some of the brutality yet to come, the day before the girls board the flight to head to Nationals, the team’s most ruthless character Taissa (played by Jasmin Savoy Brown) causes unrest amidst the ranks when she cripples another girl in practice. The following day, the team’s flight crashes and the survival story begins.

While Jackie is seen throughout the first part of the episode wearing the gold necklace from the gruesome opening scene, she gives the necklace to Shauna, just before takeoff as a good luck charm. Things are not all that they seem between best friends Jackie and Shauna, however, and Shauna has a big secret. As Shauna clearly survives (her adult counterpart is played by Melanie Lynskey), the viewer is left wondering which of the girls was in possession of the gold heart necklace when the opening scene takes place. It seems most likely that Shauna’s secrets are revealed and the necklace returns to its original owner, Jackie.

Throughout Yellowjackets season 1 episode 1, Jackie is the girl that gets along with everyone (even the angst-riddled Natalie played by Sophie Thatcher). Jackie lives in a nice house, has the good-looking (albeit dopey) boyfriend Jeff (played by The Fosters’ Jack DePew), and doesn’t seem to think too much about anything in particular. Her character is notably absent of the depth given to the other characters and also the conflict, except that Jackie seems to be a good friend to Shauna, while Shauna isn’t: not only is the young woman hiding that she was accepted to a different university than Jackie (hinting that she’s being dishonest about planning to be her roomie), but Shauna’s also carrying on an affair with Jackie’s long-time boyfriend.

How Shauna’s treachery comes to light is still unclear, but it seems likely that her secret leaks and the necklace is returned to Jackie. Although it’s possible that another one of the teens will get the necklace before the events in the opening scene, the clues all point to Jackie being killed. As the other main characters have adult counterparts in Yellowjackets episode 1, the absence of adult Jackie in the show’s later years also supports the idea that she was the one to die. It would also explain why Shauna seems so haunted by these memories. It seems likely the team turns on their golden-girl leader and offers her as the sacrifice seen in the grotesque flashes throughout Yellowjackets season 1 episode 1.
