Young Justice 9 Hidden Details About The Costumes In The Series

Young Justice is a cult favorite among DC fans introducing an ensemble of teenage superheroes. Like their Justice League seniors, Young Justice members have their unique set of costumes. But despite the show’s title, the costume design doesn’t just take inspiration from the Young Justice comics but also the visuals of classic Teen Titans and Justice League issues as well.

While the costumes of heroes like Robin, Kid Flash, and Superboy are well known to the show’s comic book nerd audience, there are some intricate details that they might have missed out on. Another aspect to note is that the costumes also receive new upgrades and changes with every passing season, which keeps each character visually interesting.

Wally West Wears Bart Allen’s Kid Flash Costume

Wally West is the first speedster in The Flash comics to take up the mantle of Kid Flash with Bart Allen being his successor. The former donned a costume that was pretty much similar to that of the Flash’s, complete with the crimson suit and yellow adornments. In The Flash #130, his yellow-and-red costume slightly resembled the costume shown in Young Justice.

And yet the show’s version comes much closer to Bart Allen’s Kid Flash costume due to the presence of goggles covering the hero’s eyes. Since he started his superhero career as Impulse, Allen is one who has been wearing yellow-tinted shades to go along with his costume in the comics, not Wally. This change was likely due to the desire to make Wally seem as young as possible as his comic book counterpart was married at the time of the show’s debut.

The Members Have Stealth Costumes Except For Certain Members

For covert operations, the team can change their costume colors from the usual ones to dark gray or black. This “stealth-tech” can be accessed by pressing on the symbols of their costumes. For instance, Aqualad can press the “A” symbol on his belt to activate the transformed costume.

Finding himself to be proficient enough in stealth, a cocky Superboy refused to wear a stealth costume. Miss Martian also declined stealth-tech because she already possessed the ability to create organic clothing at will. While Robin does sport a dark grey costume later on in the series, his costume is initially not fitted with any flourishes as he claims he was already trained enough in stealth by Batman.

Dick Grayson Wears Tim Drake’s Robin Costume

Unlike the comics, the introductory Robin in Young Justice is Dick Grayson instead of Tim Drake. However, Grayson’s Robin costume is what Drake wore in his stint as a vigilante. This seems like the perfect fashion choice as using a comic-accurate Grayson Robin costume wouldn’t fit in with the show’s modern visual aesthetic.

With pointy footwear, flashy capes, and a red-yellow-green color scheme, the costume has definitely not aged well in comparison to Tim Drake’s. While the latter has also had his share of bright colors, he has mostly donned a sharp red-and-black costume with a Robin patch stitched onto his chest (much like the costume seen in the show).

Superboy’s Look Is Inspired From Teen Titans Comics

Since his introduction in the eponymous comic book series, Superboy has been wearing costumes that resemble the red-and-blue color scheme of some of Superman’s best costumes. Still, a major difference between the two heroes was that Superboy could be found often without a cape. With volume 3 of Teen Titans, Superboy started wearing a streamlined costume that just involved a black t-shirt (with the Superman logo in red) and a pair of blue jeans.

As dedicated views already know, Young Justice has actively used this costume for the character. The Young Justice comics, on the other hand, feature Superboy in red and blue along with a black-colored, spiky, punk jacket.

Changes In Tim Drake’s Season 3 Costume

In season 3, Tim Drake’s Robin costume incorporated the familiar red-yellow-black color scheme albeit with a few new changes. This time, he sported a hood that reminds fans of his costume in some of the scariest quests in the Batman Arkham games.

In the comics, Damian Wayne also wears a similar hooded costume. This black hood is gilded with a yellow lining. The “R” logo on his chest is also sharper and pointier than the symbol on his previous costumes in Young Justice seasons. What this signifies is Tim’s growth as both a person and as a hero. With his costume now resembling other, more mature versions of the character, Young Justice’s Robin has transformed from a naive sidekick to someone who can stand on his own.

Halo’s Hijab Is A New Addition

In Young Justice: Phantom, Halo wears a new costume after the spirit revives the body of the Quaraci rebel Gabrielle Daou. In order to know more about Gabrielle, Halo also decides to understand her spirituality while adopting a hijab in her costume.

The hijab is a new element introduced for the show as the Halo from comics is a far cry from this version. The comic book counterpart sports a costume that consists of the multiple colors of the rainbow. This addition was probably an effort to be more respectful and accurate to the character’s background and culture.

GeoForce’s Green Costume Doesn’t Get The Dramatic Origin Story From Comics

While not the best member of the Young Justice team, Geo-Force is formidable enough with his heat-based powers. The young superhero gets a new green costume in the show, courtesy of Fire, a Justice League member with similar powers and matching emerald visual design.

What most fans of the show don’t know is that this change however omits a major comic book arc relating to Geo-Force. In the comics, he ditches his brown costume after the death of his sister Terra as it reminds him of his adventures with her. Batman surprisingly tries to cheer him up by gifting him a green-and-gold costume to signify a new start. He continues wearing this costume for most of his other storylines.

Justice League In Season 3 Resemble The New 52

Jim Lee oversaw the makeover of the Justice League and many other DC heroes with the New 52 reboot of the superhero team in 2011. As a result, many established characters got a visual makeover like Batman getting a chinstrap, Superman receiving a protective neck covering, and Wonder Woman ditching her trademark gold colors in her costume for a more silver-dominated look.

Renditions of these modern and updated costumes have found their way in several other DC interpretations including the Injustice video games and, more importantly, Young Justice’s season 3. While casual viewers may not know the source of these visual designs, the effect is the same: this Justice League is modern and stylish, which intimidates some members of Young Justice and inspires others.

Superboy’s Season 2 Costume Was Teased In Season 1

Fans might think that Superboy adopted his long-sleeved shirt and fingerless gloves look in season 2, but he actually debuted this look in the season 1 episode called “Usual Suspects.” In this episode, the team ends up traveling to the snow-covered Smokey Mountains where they are ambushed by Cheshire and her team of villains.

The reason behind this wardrobe change is still unclear as Superboy wouldn’t feel cold like the other humans. Maybe it was just a stylistic choice for the clone as he ditched his usual black t-shirt for this long-sleeved look in the next season. Regardless, it’s the first time Superboy changes his look in the show, adopting a more mature look that coincided with his growth as a character.
